To me, Zapotec weaving is a unique art form and my family inspires me to persevere in this field. But starting on my own was indeed a big challenge. It required a considerable investment. Those were difficult times and I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull through, and now I can honestly say it was all worth the effort and hard work.

By Flavia Ruiz, this extraordinary rug is inspired by star-filled nights in the Mexican sierra. She patiently weaves the intricate motifs in rich shades of red, blue and orange, coloring the wool with dyes derived from natural plants and flowers. Titled “Sierra nocturna,” this traditional Zapotec rug is finished with fringe. Because each rug is individually woven on handlooms, measurements could vary /- 2 inches 5 cm .
